Wincanton's Marcos Hart to judge Awards 2019 Operations SME category

Wincanton's Marcos Hart to judge Awards 2019 Operations SME category

The Logistics Awards 2019 is open for entries, which project will you submit to win? We ask Operations (SME) judge Marcos Hart, business optimisation and transformation director at Wincanton, what makes an operation a success?

Marcos is the Group Transformation & Risk director at Wincanton, leading on health & safety, business optimisation, innovation, transformation and group risk management. Much of Marcos' work focuses on digital transformation, specifically looking at how new approaches like robotics and big data analytics can keep the fast-paced logistics industry moving. Innovation is also at the heart of Marcos' role. He is influential in Wincanton's W2 Labs initiative, which invites start-ups to work with the company to turn great ideas into real businesses. Prior to joining Wincanton, Marcos held senior positions in Carillion, Fujitsu and Severn Trent Water.

SHD: As the industry experiences unprecedented change, what makes an operation – SME or Large – a success?

Marcos Hart: What determines success of an operation or business a success is broadly the same. First and foremost, you need to understand your market and the needs of your customers. If you lose sight of what keeps your customers awake at night, you lose the ability to add value to their operation. You need to differentiate from your competitors; this could be on price, product, service or approach. You need to offer something others don’t. Your people. People do business with people. Employ and retain the best team you can and treat them well. Only then will you get the best from them.

Entry has now opened for this year's The Logistics Awards, to be held at the Vox, Resort's World Birmingham on Thursday 26th September, in conjunction with the International Materials Handling Exhibition - IMHX 2019 (September 24-27, NEC Birmingham). There are 13 award categories to enter, including Environmental. Submit your logistics project here, consisting of a 50-word summary and 1,000 word document, by Friday 10 May.
