Schenker to build advanced logistics hub in Switzerland

May 07, 2013 by Peter MacLeod

A groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of construction for one of Switzerland’s most advanced logistics centres, built by Schenker Schweiz AG.

The new logistics hub will include office buildings, on a 38,500 square metre property in Pfungen, Canton Zurich. Nearly 11,600 square metre of building space will house cutting-edge infrastructure for storage, production supply, and other value-added services for logistics. The new location, close to the highways A1 and A51 as well as Zurich Airport, will offer industrial and trade customers a “one-stop shop” for contract logistics, land transport, air and ocean freight, and customs clearance.

At the groundbreaking ceremony, Jörg Eggenberger, ceo of Schenker Schweiz AG, stated: “Logistics space continues to be in high demand in Switzerland, and we are very much looking forward to this project. This is a milestone for Schenker Schweiz AG. We’re sending a strong signal and clearly committing to growth. Our Pfungen hub will create an optimum connection to the worldwide DB Schenker network. With this project, we are not only expanding our logistics space in Switzerland – we’re also merging our Embrach and Kloten locations, thus becoming even more powerful and efficient.”

The property on the Töss River will soon boast over 4,600 square metres of handling space, 7,000 square metre of logistics space with 66 ramps, and approximately 2,400 square metre of office space designed as a low-energy structure. This new logistics terminal will meet the highest safety requirements and will be equipped with an access authorization system, a closed-circuit camera security system, and a sprinkler system. Commissioning is planned for early 2014.
