Transport for the North masterplan receives cautious welcome

A 30-year plan to transform the north’s transport infrastructure has been met with a generally welcomed response from some of the logistics industry’s most familiar faces.

The proposals seek to provide road and rail links, across six major cities between the Scottish border and Midlands, including Leeds, Newcastle, Liverpool and Manchester, and could potentially deliver a £100bn economic boost and 850,000 additional jobs by 2050, according to the statutory body who had unveiled the masterplan, Transport for the North.

Members of the logistics community, including Unipart Global Logistics director Bernard Molloy (FCILT) and GS1 UK chairman Jim Spittle (FCILT) have supported the proposals, providing the project brings the required transportation infrastructure benefits, particularly routes between port destinations Hull and Liverpool.

"The lack of investment in Northern UK Infrastructure is holding back re-balancing the UK economy, for every pound spent in the North six pounds is spent in the South; we need a Crossrail for the North,” Molloy told SHD Logistics. “Brexit will have a major effect on UK Supply Chain and Logistics and the Liverpool - Hull Optimisation Freight and Transport (LHOFT) Programme will clearly demonstrate the urgent need for Government to wake up and invest, this corridor is the Gateway via both ports to the Americas and Europe."
