Thorworld enhances loading bay safety at Kingspan

Thorworld enhances loading bay safety at Kingspan

As loading bay requirements changed at its North Yorkshire operation, premium and high performance insulation supplier Kingspan Insulation Limited chose to improve the capability and safety level of its loading bay platform - for the second time - with Thorworld Industries.

An increase in the requirement to load PIR (Polyisocyanurate) insulation into the back of containers prompted Kingspan to reassess the safety features of its existing equipment. This led it to enhance its current solution with a loading bay platform, designed and installed by specialist manufacturer, Thorworld Industries.

Joanne Foley, logistics manager at Kingspan, explains: “We operate a busy loading bay and safety is our number one priority at all times. PIR insulation has always presented a challenge as it requires loading into the back of containers that are only accessible from a height.

"Because of an increase in workload we needed to upgrade our existing platform to incorporate the highest available safety standard and install a platform with safety guarding and anti-slip coating.”

Foley explains the need for a new, more appropriate loading platform, and how it had to be designed and installed within a very tight timeframe: “I needed a company that could complete the project within a three month window, and I knew that Thorworld would be able to achieve this.”

Foley’s confidence in the leading manufacturer of dock and loading bay equipment stemmed from previous experience and internal recommendations within the Kingspan group. She says: “Thorworld had previously installed a loading platform at our head office site in Pembridge. The design and specification of that solution met with our own requirements here in North Yorkshire, so I had no reservation in bringing Thorworld back on board to upgrade the loading bay.

“Work quickly began on our project and I was impressed by the engineering team’s professional approach on-site.  Everything went according to plan, the installation was very successful, customer service was second-to-none and the quality of the work was excellent.”

Now fully installed and in full use, Joanne reports that the platform is performing well, providing the safety enhancements she was hoping for.

“The new platform has succeeded in improving the safety of our loading process and, as our operators are now fully enclosed whilst manoeuvring loads, the entire procedure is more efficient and effective.”

Ian Langan, technical and engineering director at Thorworld explains: “Safety in the loading bay is key. When products or shipments alter, it is imperative that apparatus in the bay is equipped to meet its loading needs, whilst keeping operatives safe.

“We were very pleased to hear that the equipment we previously installed for Kingspan has been performing effectively, so much so that they trusted us to create as similar solution for another site. Working this closely with customers is a definite benefit, as we have a greater understanding of their needs and are able to provide a loading solution that fits their exact requirements.”

Foley concludes: “We’ve had a very positive second experience with Thorworld and I’d have no reservation in recommending them. Choosing Thorworld to design and install our loading platform has been an effective decision, and one I would happily repeat.”
