In the 10 months between January and October 2014, the ONS estimates that the quantity of food and drink bought in the UK was up 3% on the same period in 2015. After a decade of year-on-year growth of this type, it means that around 41p in every £1 spent in the retail industry in October 2014 was in food stores.
A large share of these goods moved through the cold chain and to this end, the TCS&D Show - dedicated to the storage and distribution of temperature-controlled products - takes place on 16th and 17th September 2015 in conjunction with the Food Storage & Distribution Federation and the British Frozen Food Federation.
Exhibiting at this year’s event is Lascar Electronics, one of the leading players in the data logger market for the past 40 years, and who will be showcasing its extensive range of cutting edge temperature and humidity loggers. These feature a selection of standalone and remote monitoring equipment, including the Wi-Fi range currently being used by Iceotemp.
Iceotemp Ltd provides a dedicated, temperature-controlled, time-critical distribution and delivery service on a 24/7 basis, across the UK and Northern Europe. Operating 16 temperature-controlled vans from its base in Somerset, Iceotemp Ltd provides a logistical solution for scheduled and same day deliveries of items ranging from supermarket produce, to laboratory specimens.
Paul Gould and Julian Thresher have been working in the transport industry for 18 years and now manage Iceotemp, having previously worked in airfreight and food distribution. Logging regular and detailed temperature updates is vital to maintaining the quality of service that Iceotemp provides. The chilled and frozen areas of the warehouse must be kept at a constant temperature to avoid the risk of compromising the contents inside.
The company discovered Lascar’s EL-Wi-Fi sensor solutions through a simple Internet search and invested in three EL-WiFi-TP sensors, which were then deployed in specific areas throughout the warehouse – one in the walk-in chiller, one in the walk-in freezer and a sensor occasionally placed in the rear of the vehicle to record the temperature of the goods during the night and alert the team to any issues.
Each sensor communicates via an existing Wi-Fi connection, updating the data automatically to the Cloud periodically, providing maximum simplicity to the data gathering process. Iceotemp is able to access data remotely from the Cloud and receive alerts via email giving multiple users personal accounts to access data.
The solution is flexible and scalable, depending on the peaks and troughs of the business and offers round the clock monitoring, without the need for a dedicated IT team to check the data at specific time intervals.
