Senior Traffic Commissioner Richard Turfitt will outline progress in targeting seriously and serially uncompliant transport operators at this year's Microlise Transport Conference (16th May 2018).
One of the most powerful individuals in UK transport, Turfitt took over from Beverley Bell in the spring and is now responsible for the licensing and regulation of heavy goods vehicles, buses and coaches.
He was previously the Traffic Commissioner for the East of England and before that worked for the Health & Safety Executive as a prosecutor for more than 10 years, heading the Litigation and Enforcement Advisory Team.
“By the time of the conference I will have been Senior Traffic Commissioner for a year and in a position to update the industry on the continuing work we are doing to reform processes and support compliant, responsible operators and drivers. I’ll also outline how we are targeting those who flaunt the rules and how we are making our roads a safer place for everyone," said Turfitt.
The Microlise Transport Conference last year attracted more than 1,200 transport professionals making it the largest road transport conference in Europe.
The free-to-attend conference, which will again take place at The Ricoh Arena in Coventry, includes a full day’s programme supported by focused workshops, a sizable exhibition area and an all new innovation zone.
“When the traffic commissioners speak, everyone listens. They play an important role in the safety and continued prosperity of our industry,” said Bob Harbey, Microlise Executive Director. “We are pleased that Richard accepted our invitation to update the industry as he completes the first year of his tenure in one of the most important jobs in transport.”
Past conference speakers include some of the industry’s most distinguished influencers including HRH The Princess Royal, operators such as Eddie Stobart and Maritime Transport, the DVSA and Transport for London. Almost all of Europe’s main HGV manufacturers have also been represented.
Alongside the conference, the Microlise Driver of the Year Awards will again celebrate the UK’s most talented HGV drivers, both through analysis of more than 180,000 drivers’ telematics data, and via industry nominated categories. These include HGV Hero, Lifetime Achievement, Extra Mile, Most Improved and Young Driver of the Year.
