SEMA conference targets falls from height

SEMA conference targets falls from height

SEMA, the Storage Equipment Manufacturers Association, is holding a one-day conference on 6th November 2014 entitled “Safety in the Storage Industry: Working towards Zero Harm”.

Sponsored by Troax and SESS, the event at the National Motorcycle Museum, Solihull starts at 9.30am, includes a buffet lunch and exhibition and costs £125+VAT to attend.

HSE statistics cite falls from height in the food and drink industries as the third-highest cause of fatal injury, (comprising 20% of fatal accidents) and they also result in around 80 major injuries each year. Neil Pinder of safety specialist Spanset will cover how falls from height still play a major part across the storage industry and that risk assessments need to follow the statutory hierarchy.

Michael Bone, HM Inspector for the HSE will outline how the body operates the Fee for Intervention scheme where those who break the law are liable for the recovery of the HSE’s costs related to the incident.

Brent Hudson of Machinery Safety & Compliance services gives an overview on the safe use of storage systems in relation to PUWER and CE marking.

Lawyer, Kevin Bridges of Pinsent Masons LLP makes recommendations on interacting with the Regulator and how best to guard against enforcement action.

SEMA approved inspectors Mike Pace and Stuart Howard outline the end user’s responsibilities in implementing a safe place of work.

Laura Nelson and Nick Welch of the RTITB offer practical help on choosing the right forklift for the application and expectations that should be placed on the employee in minimising forklift damage to adjustable pallet racking.

In a case study, Stadco Automotive’s Simon Randall talks about the challenges and successes faced by this international Tier One supplier of automotive products and services in order to enhance its safety management system across the board.

Martin Needham, MD of Lutterworth Ecolighting, will focus on how the correct use of lighting contributes to a safer working environment, and Arco’s Adam Willcock covers the standard applicable to eye protection with some practical examples.

Event chairman and SEMA President Jaap Vos said: "SEMA’s an organisation committed to promoting and extending the safe design, installation and use of storage equipment manufactured and supplied by our members. We work in partnership with regulatory authorities such as the HSE and CSCS.

"Our influence and contributions form part of legislation in defining new British Standards. Themes for our 2014 conference are must for those specifying and utilising storage systems to meet today’s legislation."
