S J Bargh Group acquires R.G. Bassett & Sons

S J Bargh Group Ltd has acquired Stoke-on-Trent based R.G. Bassett & Sons Ltd for an undisclosed sum.

S J Bargh’s acquisition of Bassetts complements the company’s existing operations and adds new capabilities including a strategic location at an 11-acre site with 100 employees near Stoke-on-Trent. This site is close to existing and new S J Bargh sites with excellent links to the M6 and A50. The acquisition will increase the Group’s general haulage and warehousing operations and add new driver and related training services.

Bassetts will continue as a standalone brand and as one of the leading general haulage firms in the Midlands, while S J Bargh will retain its primary focus on specialised logistics, including milk collection and distribution, for clients including Arla Foods, Joseph Heler, and Müller Milk and Ingredients.

Established in 1935, the S J Bargh Group provides specialised logistics including milk distribution, with four million litres of milk collected daily for clients including Arla Foods, Joseph Heler, and Müller Milk and Ingredients. The Group also provides general haulage, supply chain management, Palletforce membership, warehousing; third-party HGV servicing, sale of Scania parts, and driver-related training.

The S J Bargh Group now comprises of 500+ employees across four key sites in the North West and Midlands with a fleet of 500+ vehicles and assets, along with 120,000 sq ft of warehousing.

Bassetts is a leading provider of quality-assured UK road haulage, palletised distribution services, warehousing, and driver training. Established in 1897, Bassetts is known for having the operational experience and dedicated service commitment to "make it happen". Its modern fleet of vehicles is complemented by the services of the Palletforce network, enabling next-day delivery throughout the UK, at competitive rates.

There are no plans for job losses or site closures. On the contrary, S J Bargh Group says its goal is to invest in growth as it believes there is a significant opportunity to grow all aspects of both businesses as they continue to trade independently. The current employees at Bassetts will remain employees of Bassetts under new ownership.

Anthony Finlayson-Green, S J Bargh Group Managing Director, said: “Our Shareholders and Board recognise Bassetts for their integrity, commitment to quality and operational excellence.

"We made this strategic step because there is tremendous synergy between our Companies and we are delighted Bassetts are joining the S J Bargh family. The customers of both companies will also benefit as together we offer greater scale with a larger team, more vehicles and warehousing, and a host of complementary services.”

Claire Bassett, R.G. Bassett & Sons Director, said: “As the owner directors at Bassetts neared their chosen retirement age, a decision was made, after five generations stretching back to 1897, to join the S J Bargh family.

"We are delighted, because we know there is a very bright future ahead with S J Bargh, not least because they share our family values and complement our services. Lawrence and I are members of our founding family and will remain within the business to ensure there is a smooth transition and continuity for our customers and employees.”
