It’s been a little over a month since IMHX and in that time the team at RTITB has been reflecting on the re-launch of its popular Counterbalance Operators’ DVD at the exhibition.
Building on the success of the first edition, the revised and remastered DVD delivers the same quality instruction but with enhanced visuals and improved commentary, providing operators, trainers and managers with a richer, fuller instructional experience.
With a long history of setting standards in materials handling training, RTITB is an industry leader in accreditation and as such, recognises the crucial role played by standards-oriented training in the materials handling arena – an ethos echoed in the highly successful Operator of the Year competition, an event that is growing both in stature and attendance each year it is run. As Europe’s premier materials handling exhibition, IMHX proved the perfect platform for both the competition heats and the launch of the DVD.
Containing over two hours of footage, the Counterbalance Operators’ DVD is an impressive addition to RTITB’s Assist range of training aids. It provides accessible instruction in a range of core operational lessons, from an overview of the counterbalance lift truck to basic manoeuvring; from operating in confined spaces, to basic and more complex stacking operations. The DVD is an invaluable tool for operators who wish to practice their skills, instructors keen to develop their lesson provision, and employers wishing to gain insight into safe standards of operation. Quite simply it is an indispensable training aid for organisations with safety and effective operation at the heart of what they do.
Frank Williams, training manager at Yeo Valley said of the DVD: “It’s a very useful training tool for our instructors, but also makes a great refresher for our operators. It covers all the main points of operation.” He added, “Our instructors are able to access the lessons anytime to check best practice.”
The decision to launch the Counterbalance Operators’ DVD at the IMHX highlights RTITB’s ambition to put training standards and accreditation top of the agenda. Laura Nelson, director of operations said: “I’m really pleased at the response to the DVD, it shows how seriously organisations take best practice.”
With lift truck accident rates improving over recent years, initiatives like RTITB’s Operator of the Year competition and the FLTA’s National Fork Lift Safety Week are vital to sustaining continued improvement. Unfortunately, in the meantime, accidents still occur, even if the numbers are less – recent statistics indicate that approximately 2000 incidents involving lift trucks are reported each year, with a proportion resulting in fatalities. It is a well proven fact that most incidents occur as a result of poor training, operator error, a lack of general knowledge of the truck and the operating environment, and inadequate vehicle maintenance. All of which points to the need for high standards of training and education, which is why quality training provision through an accredited organisation is at the heart of RTITB’s mission.
IMHX was a good opportunity for RTITB to meet up and touch base with some of its existing accredited organisations, as well as promote the benefits of RTITB accreditation to those looking to improve standards within their own operations.
