Plan for A19/A1058 junction improvement formally considered

A major road improvement that will open up improved access to the Port of Tyne has moved a step closer.

The Planning Inspectorate has decided that the plan for the A19/A1058 Coast Road Junction Improvement can now be formally considered.

The A1058 Coast Road is a strategic route linking the city of Newcastle Upon Tyne to the coast at Tynemouth.

The application is for development consent to upgrade the existing grade separated junction to a three level junction by dropping the A19 in an open cut underpass to provide a free flowing link.

The A19 provides access to Port of Tyne and to the major employment sites of Tyne Tunnel Trading Estate, Silverlink Retail Park, Cobalt Business Park and those at South East Northumberland. A final decision on the road plan will be taken by government ministers.
