Nestle and XPO to discuss groundbreaking SEGRO East Midlands warehouse at IMHX

Nestle and XPO to discuss groundbreaking SEGRO East Midlands warehouse at IMHX

IMHX is the UK's largest intralogistics event, welcoming over 16,000 logistics professionals and is taking place next week at the NEC Birmingham. Make sure you register here to claim your free ticket before it's too late!

Nestle supply chain director – UK&I, David Hix (pictured), and XPO Logistics supply chain managing director - UK&I Gavin Williams has been confirmed as the Friday morning plenary speakers at next month’s IMHX.

The session, entitled The warehouse of the future: Collaboration is King, will highlight XPO Logistics and Nestle’s upcoming launch of a fully automated, 638,000sq ft distribution centre at SEGRO East Midlands Gateway Logistics Park in Leicestershire, dubbed the warehouse of the future, which could set a future template how real-estate companies will design industrial facilities in the long-term.

Nestlé’s Hix and Williams of XPO Logistics will both discuss how both companies will intend to maximise the new warehouse’s high-tech features, including as a proving ground for research and development. Both will also discuss the advanced tools automation experts Swisslog will bring in to the new site, a company which will provide advanced sorting systems and robotics features to the site, due to open in 2020.

The facility, a digital warehouse of the future, will be occupied predominantly by Nestlé for its consumer packaged goods and will function as a testbed environment for XPO technology prototypes prior to global release.

The facility will be sited on man-made plateaus, with landscaping to minimise the visual impact to nearby settlements. Additional sustainability measures include energy-saving LED lighting, environmentally friendly ammonia refrigeration, air source heat pumps for administration areas and rainwater harvesting.

IMHX is the UK’s largest materials handling tradeshow event in the industry calendar. This year’s event will be held from 24-27th September at the NEC Birmingham.

David joined Nestle in 1988 and spent the first 17 years of his career in a variety of supply chain and commercial roles before moving to Canada as senior VP of supply chain and technical services and later Australia as director of supply chain for the Oceania region. He was appointed to his current position in 2014. David sits on the GS1 Supervisory Board, chairing the Risk and Audit Committee, as well as the IGD Supply Chain Leaders Forum (previously ECR).  He is also a visiting fellow of the University of Huddersfield where he regularly lectures.

Gavin leads the supply chain business of XPO Logistics in the UK and Ireland as part of the company’s global logistics network. He previously managed the business unit responsible for providing consumer services to large retailers in the UK and Ireland, with a focus on e-commerce fulfilment, reverse solutions and integrated transportation. Williams joined XPO in 2014 following 17 years at Wincanton plc, where his management roles advanced to the position of business unit director. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Middlesex University.

Both David and Gavin will be joined by a plethora of high calibre speakers during the course of the four-day event. These include Alex Harvey, General Manager for Warehouse Automation and Embedded Systems, Ocado Technology, and Clare Bottle, Associate Director – Warehousing, Coca-Cola European Partners. Event sponsor Investec, health and safety legislative body HSE, fashion company Jack Wills, and defence logistics specialists Leidos are some of the industrious names featuring on the Centre Stage – IMHX’s main speaker theatre.

The main speaker theatre is free to attend on the Tuesday 24th, Thursday 26th and Friday 27th. To book your free place, please click here.
