The Logistics Awards 2018 – ones to watch

SHD Logistics’ annual awards gala - The Logistics Awards - is just one week away. Here we will be looking at some of this year’s finalists’ key logistics projects.

This year’s event, now sold out, will be held at The Swan, Shakespeare’s Globe. This year saw a record number of entries submitted, with a number of vast logistics operations including John Lewis and Ocado shortlisted for multiple awards categories.

Winners of 16 awards categories will be announced at the annual awards gala, taking place on Thursday 20th September.

The Logistics Awards, now in its fifth year, celebrates the best logistics projects over the past 12 months. As many as 360 guests across the UK logistics industry are expected to attend the event along London's South Bank. In celebration of this milestone, The Logistics Awards will host a new special category for the 2018 edition – the Winner of Winners award – the best Overall Winner over the past four years, and also includes this year’s award recipient. Marks & Spencer (2014), Kellogg’s with Voiteq (2015), Clipper Logistics with John Lewis (2016) and Pharmacy2U (2017) will contest to win the Winner of Winners Award along with the 2018 Overall Award winner.

Walker Logistics – Corporate Social Responsibility (supported by Transaid)

Walker Logistics is one of the UK’s fastest growing 3PLs. Corporate social responsibility is high on Walker’s agenda and this year will see the company open a free-to-enter museum on its site that will help educate all age groups and nationalities on the significant role that the local area played during the Second World War (see above).


Euro Car Parts - Future Skills (sponsored by IMHX 2019)

Euro Car Parts created a defined strategy that will continue to address skill levels within its operations, dealing with the challenges of increasing task automation. Its people strategy needed a robust solution that delivers talent development, retention and talent attraction. The company believe that its Logistics Learning Academy and Leadership Development Program will continue to be a great success.


Silentnight - Environment/Sustainability (sponsored by Calor)

The UK’s leading bed manufacturer Silentnight saved 400,000 litres of fuel worth £500,000 and has cut CO2 emissions by over 1,000,000 kilos with BigChange Transport and Delivery Management technology.

Ocado prides itself on the cutting edge automation and technology exhibited in all of its grocery warehouses. Each additional facility designed and constructed represents a different phase in their 17-year development, and all three of Ocado’s current operating warehouses remain among the highest performing in the UK.

Sainsbury’s Supermarkets

In 2015 Sainsbury’s embarked on a project to expand and redevelop its clothing supply chain. The project has been one of the more ambitious and complex projects in the UK clothing sector due to it being kept operational throughout and the high levels of automation involved.


Bathroom4less – Technology Innovation (SME)

LogistCompare launched an innovative online marketplace for sourcing and contracting warehouse services that is set to transform this sector of UK industry. The disruptive technology is based on an interactive portal that brings major advantages over existing practices in terms of speed, efficiency and communication.


Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery – New Facility (Under 150,000sq ft)

Siemens Industrial Turbomachinery invested £48m in the Teal Park site and to consolidate its service and storage operations into a new Global Service Operation Centre to promote health and safety, deliver reduced cycle times and costs while expanding service capabilities. The future-proof centre was delivered on time and budget.


Go Outdoors with XPO Logistics - Operations (SME) (sponsored by Toyota Material Handling)

Go Outdoors chose XPO Logistics to deliver a wide range of storage solutions for the varied sizes of their products. The West Hallam site in Derbyshire is one of the most unique sites within XPO, comprising a total of 1.3m sq ft of warehousing.


Superdry with Clipper - Innovation (sponsored by Continental Tyres)

Superdry is at the leading edge of innovation within the apparel industry. Supported by Clipper, they have established a successful and innovative solution. Through the implementation of a single stock pool – highly unique for the industry, Superdry’s solution is reaping numerous benefits and laying the foundations for further success.


Marks & Spencer - Technology Innovation (Large) (sponsored by Syft)

Logistics Reply, in conjunction with M&S, created a Portal for Suppliers, allowing all inbound product to be compliant and instantly visible upon despatch from every location. The Portal is designed for ease-of-use, quick setup and to eradicate manual data input – with total training/go-live in one day.


ASOS - New Facility (Over 150,000sq ft)

Retailer ASOS opened a new European Fulfilment Centre in Spring 2017 to improve speed of delivery and meet rapid sales growth in local markets. Just 25 short weeks after go-live the team reached peak capacity to smash their Black Friday forecast.


Operations (Large) (sponsored by Toyota Material Handling)


The logistics operation at Co-op Food stands out for its complexity and scale. In 2014 Co-op was on the outdated Manhattan WMOS (Warehouse Management for Open Systems) 2004 – it was out of support and they were running at risk. The project was about simplicity and mitigating risk rather than providing new business benefits.

John Lewis

Magna Park is comprised of two interconnected, semi-automated distribution centres, with a combined working area of 2m sq ft. Since launching in 2009, John Lewis Partnership has invested over £150m in expanding the automation solution, focusing on increasing the capacity and capability of direct to customer operations, including automation for hanging, packing and pick-to-carton technology.
