Kalmar, part of Cargotec, and DP World London Gateway are celebrating the successful introduction into service of an electrically powered Kalmar FastCharge shuttle carrier, as part of a joint pilot project that will run for approximately six to 12 months.
Kalmar has enjoyed a long and successful relationship with DP World, a leading global operator of marine and inland terminals. A semi-automated facility, DP World London Gateway is one of the most advanced deep-sea terminals in the world and is strategically located close to the United Kingdom's biggest consumption centre. The terminal is committed to minimising its environmental impact through its sustainability programme and Planet Mark certification, and views electrically powered equipment as a key part in the drive to improve eco-efficiency by reducing emissions and noise.
The Kalmar solutions at the heart of London Gateway's operations include automated stacking cranes (ASCs), an automated truck handling system as well as shuttle carriers and reachstackers. All the equipment operating at the terminal have been integrated with the Navis N4 terminal operating system, which also manages the transfer of containers to and from the adjacent logistics park and runs automated processes at its gate, the container yard and the rail terminal.

The project involved the conversion of one of the terminal's existing Kalmar hybrid shuttle carriers into an electrically powered FastCharge shuttle carrier. The modification work itself was completed in just a few weeks. Kalmar FastCharge is based on the same opportunity-charging technology used in electric buses, with charging taking place during the idle time in the shuttle carrier's working cycle. Onboard charging is supplemented by regenerative systems that store energy generated by braking and spreader-lowering operations.
The charging system consists of a charging station connected to the local power grid, a charging pole and a charging contact. The shuttle carrier's lithium-ion batteries are charged via the charging contact located on the machine pillar. The DC fast-charging sequence is fully automated and typically lasts 30-180 seconds; the driver simply engages the parking brake to begin the sequence. The charging system at DP World London Gateway is located next to the natural working route of the shuttle, in a maintenance aisle between two ASC blocks.
Eco Reachstacker with a Fuel Saving Guarantee to customers
Kalmar has also introduced an eco-efficient reachstacker with a Fuel Saving Guarantee to customers. Kalmar Eco Reachstacker is the very first solution in Kalmar's new eco-efficient portfolio - The Kalmar Eco Range. The solution was introduced to the customers today at TOC Europe that is taking place in Rotterdam, The Netherlands on 12-14 June 2018.

There are two options available of the Kalmar Eco Reachstacker. The customer can either buy the machine with the Kalmar Fuel Saving Solution, which guarantees a reduction of fuel consumption, or lease it with the Kalmar Operational Solution, which guarantees availability and performance for a fixed period with a monthly fee.
In the first option, the customer buys the Kalmar Eco Reachstacker with guaranteed reduction of fuel consumption, including the operator training and a three year license of Kalmar SmartFleet remote monitoring solution that tracks and monitors the fleet in real-time. The solution guarantees the fuel consumption for each individual application and customer. Furthermore, it guarantees to cut emissions, meet current and future emission standards, provide a better driving experience as well as enhance the customer's reputation through their contribution in improving the eco-efficiency of their operations. The fuel saving guarantee will be based on three different inputs from the customer and it will be reviewed after 12 months of use. If the agreed reduction is not met, Kalmar will pay back the difference in fuel.
The second option provides operational lease guaranteeing full availability and performance of the Kalmar Eco Reachstacker for a fixed period with a monthly fee. With the Kalmar Operational Solution, the customers can focus on their core business and Kalmar will take care of the rest. The complete solution will include the Kalmar Eco Reachstacker, the Fuel Saving Guarantee including the fuel it uses, preventive and corrective maintenance of the machine, tires, Kalmar SmartFleet remote monitoring system, operator training and financing for the solution.
