Jungheinrich virtual reality training provides immersive learning experience for engineers

Intralogistics expert Jungheinrich is using virtual reality (VR) to provide initial and further training for its after-sales service engineers across the whole of Europe.

As part of the award-winning VR training, engineers are placed in a virtual warehouse environment where they can gain in-depth experience of selected Jungheinrich forklift trucks in a variety of working situations. This enables trainees to practise a wide range of scenarios in a safe space without the risk of property damage or personal injury. Jungheinrich has succeeded in boosting the flexibility of the training it provides while also making considerable savings in terms of time and travel expenditure.

Thomas Diwan, head of the Jungheinrich Training Centre, explains: "Those taking part in the training completely forget that they are in a virtual environment. Everything seems perfectly real. Experience has shown that actions learned as part of the VR training are performed much better in real applications later on and error rates are vastly reduced. Jungheinrich is therefore planning significant expansion of its VR training."

The VR training concept, developed by Jungheinrich employees, involves trainees wearing specialised glasses to view a virtual warehouse environment. The various training units enable them to view selected forklift trucks from all sides, operate functions, take a look inside and make repairs with the appropriate tools.  The entire fleet of Jungheinrich forklift trucks can be represented as an actual-size 3D model where every component can be individually disassembled. It is also possible to go through logistical functions and processes in close-to-real conditions. Virtual reality therefore makes it possible to learn from your mistakes with no risk involved.

Jungheinrich virtual reality training won gold in the "Customer Project" category of the Immersive Learning Award 2018. The jury found that the use of VR in the Jungheinrich Training Centre clearly demonstrates how new technologies can bring quick and effective success in a learning environment.

Jungheinrich supports Business on the Move board game

Jungheinrich UK has sponsored the new Global Edition of the board game Business on the Move as part of its commitment to supporting tomorrow’s workforce of logistics and supply chain professionals.

The game, which first launched in 2014, aims to encourage engagement with the supply chain in schools from an early age, while fostering greater gender diversity and challenging preconceptions. From IT experts to web developers and global logistics experts, Business on the Move will help raise awareness of the full range of career opportunities available within the industry.

With few of the 2,800 copies of the original UK version remaining, a cross-section of 42 supply chain organisations from around the world, including Jungheinrich UK, have come together to make the new Global Edition. Players must run multimodal businesses delivering freight as quickly, profitably and responsibly as they can, confronting business challenges met by the industry day-to-day.

Patricia Smedley, one of the game’s two co-creators and a Director of the social enterprise behind Business on the Move, comments: “At a time of skills shortages and increasing globalisation it has never been more important to build the curiosity and interest of young people in supply chains from an early age.

“It is important that ‘Logistics & Supply Chains’ become a career of choice rather than a fortunate accident. This requires those businesses and organisations in the sector to connect with young people, celebrating the importance of the industry, its relevance to their learning and its intrinsic ‘wow’ factor.”

Business on the Moveis designed to meet the needs of widely differing learners, from pupils in primary school to post-graduates in international supply chain management, as well as trainees new to the sector. Jungheinrich UK will utilise the Business on the Move board game within its own organisation, incorporating it into team bonding and induction days for new recruits, as part of its Apprentice workshops, and to engage with students during career days and fairs.
