Julie Elliott MP visits Morpeth northern bypass

Julie Elliott, Member of Parliament for Sunderland South, recently visited Carillion at the Morpeth Bypass in Northumberland as part of her Industry and Parliament Trust (IPT) Fellowship.

During her visit, Ms Elliott was taken on a tour of the site and received a presentation on strategy for the bypass by a Northumberland County Council representative. Leanne August, Senior Sustainability Manager at Carillion, also explained to Ms Elliott about the ecology of the site and Carillion’s work with local stakeholders and residents during the project.

Ms Elliott also met a number Civil Engineering Apprentices who gave a presentation on their work and what they have learnt so far through their apprenticeship with Carillion. Carillion is the largest private sector employer of construction apprentices in the country and during the visit Ms Elliott found out more about the work Carillion are doing on STEM as well as with local schools.

Ms Elliott’s IPT Fellowship is designed to help her gain a deeper understanding of the housing, planning and construction sectors in order to aid her role as the Chair of the Parliamentary Labour Party Departmental Group for Housing and Planning.
Commenting on the visit Julie Elliott MP, said:

“I thoroughly enjoyed my visit with Carillion today. Visiting the site and meeting the staff and apprentices has been an extremely valuable experience for me, and one which will undoubtedly help me in my work in Parliament and in my constituency.

“This is my first Fellowship visit with the IPT and I am looking forward to building on what I have learnt and seen today with future visits.”

Dave Bennett Project Director, Carillion added: “We were delighted to host Julie Elliott MP at our Morpeth Bypass site today. Ms Elliott took a keen interest in the project and wanted to find out more about Carillion, the people we employ and the work we do, especially in the North East."
