HS2 Ltd responds to leak of Network Rail letter warning of 30 years of delays and disruption if HS2 is scrapped.
A spokesperson for HS2 has responding to the leak of a letter from Network Rail CEO Andrew Haines to the Department for Transport. In the letter, Haines warns that existing lines are full, that it would take three decades of delays and closures to upgrade, and it then still wouldn’t deliver the extra capacity offered by HS2.
The spokesperson for HS2 Ltd said, “HS2 is the only shovel ready solution to the immense strain being placed on our over-stretched rail network. Investment in a state-of-the-art, high-speed line is critical for the UK’s low-carbon transport future. It will provide much-needed rail capacity up and down the country and is integral to rail projects in the North and Midlands which will help rebalance the UK economy.”
