Both large multinationals and SMEs recently flew in from across the globe to honour the freight and logistics’ finalists and winners at the most successful Global Freight Awards yet, held in association with SHD Logistics' sister title Lloyd’s Loading List.com.
Television presenter Nick Hewer hosted the evening, which was held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, on Park Lane, London. He entertained the crowd with his sharp wit and fascinating tales about BBC’s The Apprentice and his long-standing friendship with Lord Alan Sugar. Secret guest, comedian come rapper Chris Turner, kicked off the evening with an amusing set rapping with random words selected by the audience.
The record-breaking attendance of this year’s event was topped only by the quantity and quality of entries for the hotly contested award categories, as well as the popular host. An excellent range of companies entered this year’s Global Freight Awards, from the world's biggest multinational freight forwarding and logistics providers and carriers to small and medium-sized local, national, and regional players - as well as associated suppliers, customers, and other stakeholders in the global logistics chain.
Lloyd’s Loading List.com’s editorial and digital community manager, Lucy Smith, said: “It was a fantastic evening, with the Awards ceremony proving that the freight and logistics industry remains one of the most resourceful, resilient and innovative sectors of the global economy.
“Nick was a huge success as our host and very popular with our audience, as was Chris’ humorous opening act!
“The new venue has been a huge success, so much so that we have decided to hold next year’s event there too – on Thursday 3rd November 2016.”
There was a wide range of categories across the industry to enter, from Sea Freight Solutions Provider of the Year to Specialist Freight Solutions Provider of the Year, and of course there was the esteemed Lifetime Contribution to Freight honour which was awarded to Shashi Kiran Shetty, who is chairman of Allcargo Logistics & ECU Line.
Country manager at Crane Worldwide Logistics, UK and Ireland, Jason Stretton, commented: “Crane Worldwide Logistics were overjoyed to receive the Employer of the Year award for the second year running at the Global Freight Awards. We are so very proud of the team! Congratulations to Lloyd’s Loading List.com for organising another great event!”
Westbound Shipping Services’ co-owner and director, Ryan Clark, who sponsored and presented the Lifetime Contribution to Freight Award, said: “The Global Freight Awards is something I look forward to every year purely because of its prestigious set up and networking opportunity, and its an event I would attend whether Westbound made a finalist position or not. This year we were a proud sponsor of the Lifetime Contribution to Freight award, so being at the younger generation of freight business owners, it felt great to honour Mr Shashi Kiran Shetty with this award, someone that any young business can respect and aspire to.”
As well as lifetime achievements being awarded, young people in the industry were honoured for being at the forefront of their industry, with Daniel Irving, Panalpina World Transport, and Riley Gosling, Westbound Shipping Services, both winning the Young Freight Forwarder of the Year 2015.
Panalpina’s managing director, UK and Ireland, Chris Cooper, said: "To be selected as finalists in five categories was a massive achievement for us. To come away tonight with three winner trophies, one in a category we won last year, is a testimony to the team we have on board at Panalpina. It’s very gratifying to win an award for a successful new project within the area of perishables, which is accelerating at an enormous growth rate for us.
“Everything we do is accomplished through terrific teamwork and collaboration, but occasionally you need a few stars, and in young Daniel Irving we have one. For Dan to win the prestigious Young Freight Forwarder of the Year award is a major endorsement of the quality we have within our organisation - I am so pleased for him. This was a simply brilliant night.”
The event, as well as paying tribute to the industry’s high achievers, also proved a great base for industry contacts to network. New to this year was The 2015 Finalist Selfie Twitter Campaign, which pictured the finalists’ selfie Tweets with their certificates up on the big screen, showing their customers they’re the best in the industry! The winner was Unsworth Global Logistics, and the team was invited up on stage to have a highly sought after selfie with Nick Hewer, and they also received a bottle of champagne.
The chosen charity, Transaid, had a very lucrative evening and was shown a huge amount of support by the industry. Nearly £9,000 was raised for the charity, which helps communities in developing countries access healthcare, livelihoods and road safety, with £3,344.20 raised from the ‘Heads and Tails’ game run by the host Nick, and £5,500 fundraised from the auction, in which the prize of ten days in the Caribbean was generously donated by Kestrel’s Andy Thorne and his wife.
Transaid’s head of marketing and communications, Aggie Krasnolucka-Hickman, commented: “Transaid is extremely grateful for the generous donations and the continued support of the Global Freight Awards. It will go a long way in the countries where we work.”
An overwhelming number of entries for the event were received this year compared with previous years, and Lloyd’s Loading List.com wishes to thank everyone who took the time to enter the Awards, and to the respected judges - including SHD Logistics' editor Peter MacLeod - as well as say a massive thank you to all of the sponsors for helping make it such a fantastic evening. Lloyd’s Loading List.com of course would like to congratulate all of the winners and highly commended, and to those who were shortlisted; the calibre of entrants was higher than ever this year, proving a challenging and unenviable task for the judges.
Lloyd’s Loading List.com looks forward to seeing you next year on Thursday 3rd November 2016 at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London.
