Managing director of Yusen Logistics (UK) and member of The Logistics 100 - Kevin Appleton - answers our questions.
Kevin Appleton is managing director of Yusen Logistics (UK) and a non-executive board member of the FTA.He has been in company leadership positions in 3PL and logistics-using companies for over 20 years – including FedEx, Lavendon Group And Travis Perkins. He believes in the power of motivated people and well thought-through use of technology to enable better decisions.
SHD Logistics (SHD): Kevin, your attitude to well thought-through technology has supported your decision making and helped place you on The Logistics 100 list. Can you share some of your best decisions from over the last 20 years?
Kevin: Very honestly, my best ‘technology’ decision has been to develop the habit of getting involved in seeing the output of design or configuration work at a very early stage. It is so easy, and tempting, to assign a particular piece of development requirement to a combination of operators and ‘techies’ and assume it will come out right. Being the person who challenges all parties to think more creatively or, often, more simply really pays dividends.
SHD: What changes and developments are you expecting/predicting for the logistics industry over the next five years?
Kevin: Retail supply chains, in particular, will continue to drive home delivery or click and collect services.
