Aldi, the UK’s fifth largest supermarket chain, is to add a 516,000 sq ft extension to its HQ at Atherstone, Warwickshire.
The retailer has applied to North Warwickshire council for 140,000 sq ft of new ambient and chilled warehousing, a 700-place multistorey car park and another 201,000 sq ft of offices.
Aldi said they expected development to be phased over four years. The document predicts the development will create 865 new jobs.
Plans to build on a 13 acre plot at Holly Lane, Atherstone, are expected to be decided by the council early this summer.
Retail sales data from Kantar Worldpanel, published last week, shows Aldi now claim 7.3% of total U.K. grocery spending, the German retailer's highest yet. The figure put Aldi ahead of the Co-op as the U.K.'s fifth largest supermarket chain. Waitrose is in 8th place behind Lidl.
